The FTSE 100 sank by as much as 3% today, within a usly close to the following yesterday’s 2.6% slump. More than £100 billion has been wiped from the blue-chip index this week.
The FTSE 250, which comprises more domestic-focused companies, fared even worse. It suffered a steep decline to bottom out at 19,381, the lowest level since November 2020.
RBC said: “Risk sentiment soured in the early hours of the overnight session after news headlines suggested that Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was on fire after Russian shelling.”
Subsequent reports suggested the fire was under control but Susannah Streeter at Hargreaves Lansdown said: “Investors are rattled.”
