A total of 99 Conservative MPs opposed Mr Johnson's plan for Covid passes to enter nightclubs and other larger venues while a further 18 abstained. Although the move - part of a package of Plan B measures to stem the spread of the Omicron variant - was passed by MPs by 369 to 126 thanks to support from Labour, the scale of the rebellion was far larger than predicted and one of the biggest faced by any Tory Prime Minister since World War Two. Conservative rebels today fired further warning shots at the Prime Minister, who could face another major blow tomorrow with the Tories fighting to hold the "safe seat” of North Shropshire in a crucial by-election.
The Conservatives won the rural constituency with a majority of nearly 23,000 in 2019.
The vote was triggered by the resignation of Owen Paterson, the former minister at the centre of the recent sleaze storm.
