Antioxidants have the ability to protect our bodies against the limpacts of free radicals. In doing so, they potentially lower the likelihood of cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers and chronic conditions associated with oxidative stress. The good news is that these beneficial compounds are present in a variety of foods, with fruits and vegetables being notable sources.

"Such food items are frequently distinguished by their elevated fibre content, minimal levels of saturated fat and cholesterol and an abundance of essential vitamins and minerals," says Mumbai-based dietician Dr Ruchi Rai. Interestingly, you can up your intake of antioxidants while making more conscious snacking choices. Dr Rai shares a few food items to replace the usual suspects.

DARK CHOCOLATE

It contains compounds that shield against the oxidation of bad cholesterol (LDL), thereby lowering the risk of heart disease. It also offers minerals , copper, magnesium and manganese, which play a role in the formation of healthy blood cells, bolstering of the immune system and healthier bones. The antioxidants found in cocoa and dark chocolate have also been associated with a decrease in inflammation and reduction in heart disease risk.
