Bumrah last played for India in a T20I in September 2022 but a recurring back injury kept him on the sidelines since then. He underwent surgery in New Zealand in March.
Given that his comeback from an earlier injury was rushed, the Board was extra careful this time around. He spent more than two months at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), slowly increasing his workload with the eventual goal of becoming fit for the home ODI World Cup.
He has played a few practice games at the NCA but simulated practice or bowling in the nets can only give us a general idea of fitness. A true test is bowling in an official match where you are often called upon to give that little bit more for the team.
That test is exactly what India will hope Bumrah can ace in the matches against Ireland. They won't be as high intensity as the Asia Cup that begins on August 30, but it will give the selectors and the team management an accurate idea of how his rehabilitation has gone.
