Protein supplements are immensely popular in the fitness world for facilitating physical performance and muscle growth. However, an incident in the UK - where 16-year-old Rohan Godhania lost his life after consuming protein shake-highlights the importance of responsible consumption. While the tragic death occurred in 2020, a judicial enquiry only recently found that the protein drink had triggered a rare genetic disorder ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency in the Indian-origin teen, which led to "irreversible brain damage".
"Such cases are extremely rare and should not discourage people from consuming protein shakes if used responsibly and in accordance with recommended guidelines," says Dr Aparna Dhar, medical geneticist, adding that it is "essential to be aware of their potential health hazards". "In rare cases, certain genetic conditions can be aggravated or revealed when an individual consumes excessive amounts of protein," Dhar explains.
