A storm barrelled into the northeastern US on Monday, flooding roads and downing trees, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands, forcing flight cancellations and school closures, and killing at least four people.
Utility crews worked on Tuesday to restore power to hundreds of thousands of customers in Maine and some rivers continued to rise in New England following the storm.
More than 13 centimetres of rain fell in parts of New Jersey and northeastern Pennsylvania by mid-morning, and parts of several other states got more than 10 centimetres, according to the National Weather Service. Wind gusts reached nearly 113kmph along the southern New England shoreline.
Maine had over 430,000 customers without power as of early on Tuesday, half of its utility customer base, according to Poweroutage.us.
