Rahul Mitra, 34, has to drive three hours in South Delhi — from his Badarpur home to where he works in Moti Bagh. Ideally, it shouldn’t take more than an hour. But due to the perennially gridlocked Mathura Road and Ring Road, the IT professional wastes precious hours every day.
“I leave at 8am. I have no other choice. I often have my breakfast in my car,” he said.
Mitra is only one among thousands who go through this and more. This is because Delhi has become the world’s eighth most congested city where commuters are compelled to lose extra 190 hours — seven days and 22 hours — every year during peak hours, recent TomTom Traffic Index findings have revealed. The overall congestion in the city has been found to be 56%.
This comes at a time Shaheen Bagh protests have affected traffic movement, especially in South Delhi, for more than two months now.
Though the protesters have blocked the access to a Delhi-Noida road, ripple effects are being felt on many adjoining links, including DND Flyway.
