As the confirmed cases of Coronavirus epidemic rise across the country, people have started abandoning pets in Delhi-NCR, animal activists claim. This assumes significance after wildlife authorities in India were asked last week to stay alert, watch for any sick animal with potential symptoms and reduce animal-human interface.
This a day after a tiger at a zoo in the US tested positive for the disease, putting to rest the reports that animals do not get infected by COVID-19. “Hundreds of pets have been abandoned in Delhi-NCR. The numbers can be higher, as in many cases they remain unreported,” said Ruchika Aggarwal, an animal rights activist in West Delhi. The activist said they had received reports of many owners locking down their pets during the prohibitions in Delhi-NCR.
