Pingris, the heart and soul of the Magnolia Hotshots, announced his retirement Wednesday, May 25 through a lengthy but heartfelt social media post where the 39-year-old forward reminisced and thanked everyone who had been a part of his basketball career.
The 15-time PBA All-Star and longtime member of the national team posted a two-minute video of memories from a pro career that started in 2004 when he was selected third overall by the FedEx Express.
“I remember my name being called during the 2004 PBA Draft, doon nagsimulang matupad ang pangarap ng isang batang palengke,” said Pingris, the Pozorrubio, Pangasinan native who went on to become one of the 40 Greatest Players in the PBA.
“Sixteen years na din ako sa PBA pero alam ko na ngayon na din ang tamang panahon para umpisahan ang bagong chapter ng buhay ko,” said Pingris, a product of Philippine School of Business Administration.
A person close to Pingris said that there are no plans on joining the Magnolia coaching staff, but the player known by his moniker “Pinoy Sakuragi” wants to focus on his family and business ventures.
