Numbers always tell the story. Between Brisbane (when India, led by a third-string side, beat Australia to win a fantastically fought four-Test series) and the Oval (where Virat Kohli’s men have set up the England series for another potentially glorious finish), the numbers that Test cricket has thrown up from a TV perspective are rather impressive.
TV viewership has been encouragingly high
In Australia, the 2021 Brisbane Test had turned out to be the most-watched game ever on subscription TV and the average audience of the series itself recorded a 33% increase from 2019, when India had last visited the country.
Cut to the second Test at Lord’s in the ongoing series, the average ratings on the final day of the match grew at around 70% while the final session of the day’s play saw an average viewership of 10.7 million impressions.
It was one of the most-watched Test match sessions in recent years. Industry executives have no hesitation in accepting that only an India vs Pakistan contest can better these figures. The Ashes cannot. The Oval numbers aren’t out yet.
