Beijing says pact will intensify arms race
China on Thursday denounced a new Indo-Pacific security alliance between the US, Britain and Australia, saying such partnerships should not target third countries. Chinese spokesman Zhao Lijian said the three countries were “severely damaging regional peace and stability, intensifying an arms race, and damaging international nuclear non-proliferation efforts”. “China always believes that any regional mechanism should conform to the trend of peace and development... It should not target any third party or undermine its interests.”
Canberra: Australia has canceled a contract with France for conventional submarines and instead will build nuclear-powered submarines using US technology because of changing strategic conditions in the region, PM Scott Morrison said on Thursday. President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday new US security alliance with Australia and Britain that will help equip Australia with a nuclear submarine fleet.
