Mumbai: At 5.53 pm on Thursday, three days after TOI first reported that Virat Kohli will step down as white-ball captain after the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup, the star batsman put out a message on social media announcing his decision to quit as T20 captain after the event.
The decision was taken by Kohli himself. Neither the Indian cricket board (BCCI) nor the selectors had asked him to step down in any format. TOI’s report on Monday had clearly stated that he was contemplating such a move as he wanted to give himself space and time to concentrate on his batting.
Kohli’s post on Thursday confirmed as much. “Understanding workload is a very important thing...I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian team in Test and ODI cricket,” Kohli said. “I have given everything to the team during my time as T20 captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 team as a batsman moving forward.”
