The curious case of the third-round clash between fifth-seeded German Alexander Zverev and French man Adrian Mannarino, who were supposed to take the Louis Armstrong Stadium court at 2.30 pm local time, may have eventually been settled by a four-set scoreline. But for almost three hours, until the players walked on court, fans and the media were left guessing about what was going on.
After two hours of suspenseful wait, Zverev and Mannarino finally took the court. The German won 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in just under three hours after the 32-year old Mannarino sought medical attention early in the third set.
A cryptic statement from the USTA, which raised more questions than provided answers, only served to whet the appetite.
Mannarino was one of the primary contacts of compatriot Benoit Paire, who had tested positive for Covid-19. As he was readying for his match, the Frenchman was informed that the New York state department of health had deemed that he would have to be quarantined in his hotel room, and therefore would not be able to take the court.
