A slew of unhealthy habits hinder the customary ‘repair and prepare’ mechanism of the body, cautions Dr Ramakanta Panda of Mumbai’s Asian Heart Institute
We are living in times when the amount of pollution in cities like Delhi and Mumbai is equivalent to smoking 20 cigarettes a day. If this were not enough, the lifestyles that Indians follow have made things worse.
When I came back to India 28 years ago and started practising, we were seeing one to two patients below 30 years of age with heart-related issues in a year. Nowadays, we see three to four such patients in a week. Indians are more prone to heart disease due to sedentary lifestyle and bad food habits with high content of saturated fat and calories; this coupled with tobacco use and stress is resulting in Indians now getting heart disease almost 10 years earlier. In the last three decades, the incidence of heart disease has gone up significantly, and 40 has become the new 70, when it comes to heart disease.
There are three patterns that I can clearly see....
