MAKING A POINT: German environmentalist Arnd Drossel, who walked from Germany to Glasgow in this metal ball, at a protest rally in Glasgow on Saturday
Glasgow: With the first week of the UN climate conference (COP26) ending on Saturday with 90% of the global economy covered by ‘net zero’ pledges, including the much talked of Indian promise, conference president Alok Sharma said there is a mechanism to track climate finance, a key issue highlighted by India and several developing nations.
“When we took on this role of presidency, only 30% of the economy was covered by ‘net zero’, but now it’s being covered by 90% of the global economy. I think by any measure it’s progress. But now it’s also important to see how countries deliver on this commitment and that’s why transparency is one of the key areas which we want to resolve in this room,” Sharma told TOI in response to a question on how the mid-century ‘net zero’ goal could be reached. Sharma is also minister of state at the UK cabinet office.
