Seven-year-old Manav was brought to yoga class by his mother as a ‘hyperactive’ child, who was fussy about eating and did not complete his school work because he could not sit in one place for lo g enough. The reasons that the parents cited were his own attitude issues combined with distraction from mobile games, television, internet and the influence of his friends who were also hooked to gadgets.
It is not uncommon to find many parents facing this kind of challenge nowadays. Parents feel loss of control in such a situation and d not know how to deal with this. Conventionally we know of the ‘carrot and stick’ method to discipline and train the children. Often this approach is used to bribe the children in exchange for something they need to do - “If you finish your homework you can play your favourite video game after that.” or punish children if they make a mistake or miss doing something: “If you do not score good marks I will not buy a cycle for your birthday”. These are well-known techniques and seemingly work for both the child and the parent – so what is not right here?
