Yay Or Nay To Invented Spelling?
Parents World|Issue 67

Before you correct your child’s spelling, Wheelock College students Isabelle, Jessica, Beverley, and Jovina share about the benefits and challenges of invented spelling and what you can do when children use invented spelling.

Yay Or Nay To Invented Spelling?

Entering the classroom, Charlotte, a preschool teacher, was greeted with numerous beautiful children’s art pieces. Each drawing was accompanied with a sentence that was written by the little artists themselves. The descriptions were accurately spelt and Charlotte was impressed with the children's language standards, albeit these impressions did not last long. During the next writing practice, it finally dawned on her why the children could spell so well previously. Throughout the writing class, Charlotte was peppered with questions by children who were asking, “Teacher, how do I spell…” and she was generous in her assistance. At this moment, Charlotte decided to change how the class learnt spelling by implementing Invented Spelling.
