Stealth games have become encumbered by gadgets and widgets to help players overcome any situation - Solid Snake and Sam Fisher have evolved into walking Swiss Army knives with a flipout tool for any contingency. It's a wonder these stealth heroes aren't heard chinking and clunking from miles away. But Karl Fairburne? He goes to war with a hat on a stick and an earnest self-belief in his ability to shoot gonads from 600 yards.

The stealth gameplay of Sniper Elite 5 is proudly analogue. You're given a limited number of tools to help you avoid German patrols, but each one has many creative uses as the game's AI ensures no situation unfolds in precisely the same way twice. This is because your enemy is restricted to the same WW2-era capabilities as you; line of sight and sound governs everything. If an enemy hears you, they will hunt for you at that position. Lay a mine and move to a new position and you can take out a Nazi hunting party safely from another area of the map.
