Nestled in the Churu district of Rajasthan, the Tal Chappar Wildlife Sanctuary lies on the Nokha-Sujangarh state highway, about 132 km. from Bikaner.
The sanctuary covers about eight square kilometres and is home to the black buck as well as many bird species. We reached at around 3:45 p.m. and were welcomed by our guide Anand Prasad, who has been involved in conservation efforts here for the past 11 years.
GOSHALA SAFARI
Anand took us on a safari, not to the reserve, but to the goshala, a community grazing area, which is designated as public land. Endowed with rich bird life, it attracts a number of raptors* looking for spiny tailed lizards to feed on.
The reserve has tall grass comparable to the African savannah, while the goshala has short coarse grass, allowing for unique biodiversity to thrive. It also has large trees, upon which birds such as the Spotted Creeper, Laggar Falcon, Steppe Eagle, Tawny Eagle and Booted Eagle perch.
