It would be wrong to say that the younger Barnes sister has never been much of a time triallist; she was a fairly solid top 20 placer in her first two years with Drops. But she wasn’t the force that she has become today. While it’s a little unfair to compare her to her sister, it is illustrative that in 2017 Hannah beat her in every TT they did together. In 2018 they shared the spoils and in 2019 Alice has a 100 per cent winning record. That’s Alice getting better, not Hannah getting worse.
She has worked at the discipline to get that far, both fine-tuning her position and increasing her power output. She has only once been outside the top five this season in time trials and of course won the Nationals by a 15-second margin. All this improvement puts her in contention for a top five place but she will probably need the cards to fall her way to claim a podium spot. That said, given the improvements she’s made this year already that is within her reach.
