7 Worst Signings In The History Of IPL

Every year, the Indian Premier League (IPL) sees franchises splurge a lot of money at the auction. From superstar players to rising talents, crores are spent on picking players from all over the globe. At the IPL 2023 auction held in Kohli in December 2022, England all-rounders Sam Curran and Ben Stokes and Australia's upcoming star Cameron Green were the most expensive purchases. Curran was signed by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for Rs 18.5 crore, making him the most expensive signing at the IPL. Green was picked up by Mumbai Indians (MI) for Rs. 17.5 crore, while seasoned England cricketer Stokes was purchased by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for Rs 16.25 crore. Like at the latest auction, over the years, a number of cricketers have been purchased for massive sums, but not all of them have proved to be value-for-money players. Ahead of IPL 2023, we look back at seven expensive players who fared miserably in the IPL.

JAYDEV UNADKAT

Indian left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat was rather surprisingly purchased for a whopping Rs 11.5 crore by Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the IPL 2018 auction. Unadkat had a wonderful season for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017. In 12 matches, he picked up 24 wickets at an average of 13.41 and an excellent economy rate of 7.02, with a best of 5/30. Based on the stellar show, RR went all out for him at the IPL 2018 auction and bought him for a massive sum. It was a decision that backfired as Unadkat had a very poor season. In 15 matches, he managed only 11 wickets at a disappointing average of 44.18 and an unacceptably high economy rate of 9.65. Surprisingly, RR backed Unadkat for the next couple of seasons as well, at lower prices, before finally running out of patience.
