The 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup is set to be held in October-November. There is still no clarity over the hosts of the event. India were originally scheduled to organize the mega event. However, in the wake of the COVID situation in the country, that possibility has been all but ruled out. UAE has emerged as one of the top contenders to host the event while Oman has emerged as a potential co-host. The T20 World Cup was last held in 2016, West Indies overcoming England in a pulsating final. As we build up to this year’s edition, here’s a look at some impressive records from the tournament.
1. MOST RUNS: MAHELA JAYAWARDENE
Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene holds the record for having scored the most runs in the T20 World Cup. He played 31 matches and scored 1016 runs at a strike rate of 134.74 with one hundred and six fifties. In fact, he is the only batsman to have notched up over 1000 runs in the tournament. Chris Gayle is next on the list with 920 runs from 28 matches.
2. HIGHEST INDIVIDUAL SCORE: BRENDON MCCULLUM
Former Kiwi captain Brendon McCullum holds the record for having notched up the highest individual score in the T20 World Cup. He achieved the feat when he hammered 123 off 58 balls against Bangladesh at Pallekele in September 2012. McCullum smashed 11 fours and seven sixes during his belligerent innings. A total of eight hundreds have been registered in the T20 World Cup so far.
3. HIGHEST STRIKE RATES (MINIMUM 125 BALLS) – DAREN SAMMY
