Leopard Trail, Baviaanskloof
The Experience
The word Baviaanskloof – from the Dutch for ‘Valley of Baboons’ – refers to a narrow and rugged gorge set within the Sarah Baartman district of the Eastern Cape. This World Heritage site is blessed with pristine natural grandeur and a landscape brimming with deep kloofs, mountain cascades, steep passes and extensive fynbos slopes.
Baviaanskloof itself is just on 200km in length, and is embraced by mountain ranges to both the north and south. The valley is situated at a lower altitude than the inland Karoo basin to the north, resulting in intensified rainfall filtering into the kloof, and therefore creating a lush landscape supporting a diverse variety of fauna and flora.
