DOM Bess made a stunning start to the season as Essex capitulated to an innings defeat in Barbados inside three days.
The county champions, who went through the 2017 season unbeaten in red-ball cricket, were on the receiving end of a comprehensive defeat.
Somerset all-rounder Bess was the architect of their downfall with a maiden first-class century and an eight-wicket haul with his offspin.
His efforts were supported by Northants paceman Richard Gleeson who also took advantage of the early Essex batting rustiness with five wickets in their first innings, including a hat-trick, before bagging another three wickets second time around.
