STEVEN Mullaney and Paul Franks were bouncing off the walls of their hotel room in South Africa last week as Ross Taylor caught fire in Dunedin.
The Nottinghamshire skipper and assistant coach were rooming together on the county’s pre-season tour and tuned in just in time to see the final stages of Taylor’s historic match-winning 181 not out against England.
While Taylor’s move to Trent Bridge for the first half of this summer had not yet been officially confirmed, both Mullaney and Franks knew the Kiwi was on his way.
And if the 34-year-old can bring that sort of form to the Outlaws, then Mullaney knows his job as skipper will be made a lot easier.
“I was rooming with the General (Franks) in South Africa and I came in at the end of Ross’ innings, I think he was already on about 130,” he said.
“But we were enjoying that in the hotel room, that’s for sure – that was an incredible knock.
“Hopefully we get more of the same! I hope he gets a few in the Test series as well but of course that England win.”
