USMAN Khawaja carried his Ashes form into the Big Bash as the left hander hit a superb 85 to lift the Sydney Thunder to a vital win over the Perth Scorchers yesterday.
Khawaja, fresh from his 171 at the SCG in the fifth Test against England, came back into the Thunder side just as Jos Buttler departed to link up with England for the ODI series.
And his 51-ball knock against a Scorchers attack without Andrew Tye, Jhye Richardson and David Willey also due to ODI call-ups, lifted them to 175-4.
That looked well beyond the Scorchers when they fell to 35-4 in the seventh over of their reply, but then Cameron Bancroft (75no) and Hilton Cartwright (65no) came together.
And they more than made a game of it, only ending up three runs short after an eventful final over from Mitchell McClenaghan.
That was a must-win game for the Thunder, while the Scorchers – for whom Tim Bresnan (2-38) made his first appearance of this year’s BBL – have hit the skids somewhat after a strong start.
