Jermain Defoe combined speed with accuracy to become one of the Premier League's finest goalscorers

The 100 Club Jermain Defoe

With tremendous pace and the single-minded determination to find the back of the net all great goal-scorers need, Jermain Defoe was marked out as future star of the game even before making the breakthrough into senior football. While an Eastender, he was one of the most promising youngsters on the books of Charlton Athletic when West Ham United targeted him and he moved to Upton Park as a scholar in 1999.

Within a year he had scored on his senior debut but West Ham decided he needed to gain experience lower down the league ladder and in October, 2000, he was loaned to AFC Bournemouth. His impact was immediate and headline-grabbing. The 18-year-old scored in 10 successive league games, a feat never achieved before or since, and finished the season with 19 goals.
