And with the 19th pick …

A first-round quarterback again? It’s scary to imagine, but Washington might need one and there’s always the owner Dan Snyder’s marketing wow factor.

And with the 19th pick …

Then again, Washington needs upgrades at outside linebacker, left tackle, cornerback, receiver, running back and tight end. Really, any place aside the defensive line, receiver Terry McLaurin and cornerback Kendall Fuller are open. And, this list assumes Washington re-signs guard Brandon Scherff.

Too bad No. 19 overall isn’t really 19 picks because Washington may have won the NFC East title, but is still a handful of players away from truly contending.

Washington is too far down to get one of the marquee passers like Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, BYU’s Zach Wilson or North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. Lawrence goes No. 1 overall to Jacksonville, Fields is chosen next by the New York Jets, Wilson is taken No. 4 by Atlanta and New England goes for Lance at No. 15. That’s if Houston doesn’t trade Deshaun Watson and take a passer.

Washington would be smart to wait until the second or third round for a passer if it indeed takes one. The emergence of Taylor Heinicke gives Washington a potential young starter, but if Alex Smith retires then there’s room to get a passer this year.
