BORDERX EXTREME
The BorderX Extreme sleeps two on a double bed up front in the nose section and has a rear doorway, with the focus being on outside living. It has a license mass of 920kg compared to the bigger Expedition model that comes in at 1 540kg.
But who is BorderX? In the August 2019 issue, we featured a story on the then-latest double-axle off-roader, the BorderX Expedition, an off-road caravan built by husband and wife team Werner and Desna Pretorius for their personal use. This decision was spurred on after losing their caravan in an accident in Namibia.
They decided to build a caravan to overcome certain shortcomings their previous caravan presented and, both being engineers, they put their heads together to create an off-roader that would suit their lifestyle and personal needs.
It would know no boundaries –hence the name BorderX – with the X depicting the unknown destination and the Border suggesting it is capable of traveling to Cairo if need be. Their first priority was developing a suspension specifically designed for soaking up the road less traveled and, of course, overall durability. Working with Roadque, one of the biggest trailer component manufacturers in SA, BorderX developed what appears to be the sexiest off-road suspension available. It is built using stainless steel and is painted red so as to be a feature and catch the eye of any hot-blooded South African. The suspension features dual orange-painted shock absorbers and blackened wheel rims, all on a sturdy structure that looks fit to, well, take on Africa. Another advantage of this independent suspension system is that there is no axle under the center of the chassis to foul on middelmannetjies, be it soft sand or axle bending solid granite.
