Come December, it’s time to head to the beach. Every coastal destination, from the more popular ones of the west to the scenic beaches of the east, has a distinct identity, and while all offer you sun, surf and sand, each one has its own kind of magic.
WEST COAST
Ganapatipule Maharashtra
One of the most spectacular, white sand beaches on the Konkan coast, Ganapatipule in Ratnagiri is an idyllic setting that is less crowded than some of its counterparts in the neighbouring state of Goa. Rich in flora, such as coconut groves and mangroves, the beach is clean and the water clear, giving you ample reason to leave your footprints on its sand. There is also an ancient temple close by—of Swayambhu Ganesh—that is frequented by pilgrims all year round. The deity is said to have sprung from the soil about 400 years ago and faces west, unlike other temples which face east. The beach does not have many options in water sports although it does offer camel and horseback rides. But if it’s a laid-back time that you are looking for on a picturesque, unadulterated beach, then this one’s for you. Do try some local flavours like jackfruit and mangoes to better experience the place.
