Seven Jewels.
PUDUCHERRY
This former colony exudes a distinct French air. The town, which hugs the sea, is laid out in a tidy grid of streets lined with lovely white buildings and little patches of green punctuated by exuberant bougainvillea. Rubbing shoulders with the Ville Blanche, or the white town, is the colourful ethnic side with its temples and bustling markets. The sweeping promenade along the ocean is where the city gathers to run, walk and take in the breeze. An eclectic mix of restaurants, free-flowing drink and a slow pace make up the Puducherry experience. Nearby Auroville attracts the spiritually inclined. The heart of Auroville is Matri Mandir. It is a magnificent edifice with serene meditation chambers. Besides meditating at Matri Mandir, other Auroville activities you can engage in are yoga, tai-chi, and courses in alternative healing.
DAMAN & DIU
These were once Portuguese enclaves, now known for their churches, forts and unspoiled beaches. In Diu, the picturesque island located off the southern tip of Saurashtra, is the Diu Fort, with its double moat, from whose ramparts you can get some great sea views. Nagoa Beach is one of Diu’s best known, a horseshoe-shaped expanse of sand washed by the waves. It’s safe for swimming and you can also indulge in water sports here. Just beyond the city wall of the Diu Fort are the Naida Caves, an intriguing network of square hewn hollows and steps. Daman’s showpiece is the popular Devka Beach, an excellent spot for a family outing with opportunities for swimming and gathering shells. Jampore Beach in Nani Daman is one of the few black sand beaches in India.
