Being smart while travelling can help you avoid becoming a crime statistic
There will always be risks while travelling. What matters is preparing for the worst in a sane and sensible way rather than restricting your activities out of fear.
Planning ahead is important. First, when applied to security, it exposes blind spots. We all have them: we’re simply unaware of certain people, situations or actions and how others see those in a different light. Second, it forces us to think ahead and anticipate times and places in which we may be exposed, so we can choose safer options. Planning for security concerns should form part of every decision. For example: inform family, friends or colleagues about your activities. Even if visiting a place for only a few days, ensure that you have at least a travel itinerary and stick to it.
