A Guide to the Latest Breast Cancer Screening Options and When You Might Go Beyond the Mammogram
Sorting through all the breast cancer screening guidelines can make you wish you had a medical degree. The first factor to consider and discuss with your doctor: Your risk, part of which involves your family history of cancer, says Dr Marissa Weiss, founder and chief medical officer of breastcancer.org. Have any relatives had cancer, and what type? Breast, ovarian, and prostate need to be considered. And at what age? Under 50 is more worrisome than older; it suggests a potential genetic cause.
As for what age to start screenings—and how often to get them—health organisations are still debating. For women at average risk, suggested start ages range from 40 to 45 to 50, either yearly or biennially. Ultimately, it comes down to what your doctor recommends.
