This wacky way of marking my birthday changed my life

Walking up to the trollies in the car park, I picked a sturdy looking one.

Keen shopper?

Nope. Instead of wheeling it into the store, I clambered in.

‘Go!’ I instructed my husband Charlie, 68, who began pushing me round and round the Tesco superstore and car park.

People stared, but we didn’t care. We had to keep going for a whole mile!

And this was just one of the unusual ways I was marking my 60th birthday. Let me explain.

Back when I’d turned 50, I’d felt really glum about it.

‘I’m halfway to 100! Almost dead!’ I moaned.

A negative person, I dwelled on the downsides. Older, wobblier, stiffer…

Charlie encouraged me to be positive, but I found it hard.

I should’ve been cheerier. I was lucky enough to have good health, and had a job I loved in a funeral parlour. And I was mum to four grown-up sons.
