They told him it was a place of evil.&nbsp;Where trees refused to grow. Where no animal would go, and over which no bird would fly.&nbsp;The Nest of the Fire Eagle.&nbsp;It was 1949. Russian geologist Vadim Kolpakov was on a study expedition in Irkutsk, Siberia, where he met the local Yakut people.&nbsp;They warned him not to visit the Nest of the Fire Eagle &ndash; the Patomskiy crater &ndash; as those who did sometimes didn&rsquo;t return.&nbsp;But Vadim was intrigued. He journeyed on, deep into the woods.&nbsp;And then he found it.&nbsp;<em>When I first saw the crater, I thought that I&rsquo;d gone crazy, he wrote later. A perfectly shaped mount the size of a 25-storey building sitting in the middle of the woods.</em>&nbsp;The cone-shaped mound was made entirely of rock, 80 metres high, and 150 wide.&nbsp;At the centre, a cavity. Inside it, a mound in the shape of a giant egg.&nbsp;Locals said it was here that the fire eagle nested.&nbsp;At the beginning of time, the giant bird was said to have dived to the bottom of the ocean and brought up the mud the Earth was made from.&nbsp;But Vadim Kolpakov wanted a more scientific explanation.&nbsp;So he and other scientists returned many times to the&nbsp;crater. Some suffered headaches when they were there and ringing in their ears. And no-one could explain why.&nbsp;At first, they thought the mound must be a slag heap, an oddly formed hill made up of refuse from a mine or quarry.&nbsp;But there were no mines or quarries for miles around.&nbsp;It wasn&rsquo;t a volcano, either.&nbsp;Scientists believe it&rsquo;s no more than 250 years old.&nbsp;Tests showed there was hardly any radiation around the crater.&nbsp;Yet, around the time it was formed, radiation levels at the crater were high.&nbsp;It led some to believe the crater had been created by a meteor strike.&nbsp;But if so, when did it strike?&nbsp;No actual meteor collision has been recorded within the last 250 years.&nbsp;Except, in 1908 something was recorded. A massive explosion on 30 June.&nbsp;Just after 7am, people in Siberia saw a column of blue light across the sky. Suddenly, there was a blinding flash and a roar.&nbsp;In an instant, 2,000 square kilometres of Siberian forest was flattened, vegetation destroyed, and 80 million trees reduced to ash.&nbsp;The energy of the explosion was 1,000&nbsp;times greater than the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima, and created a change in atmospheric pressure felt as far away as the UK.&nbsp;The epicentre of the blast was just 70km from the Nest of the Fire Eagle.&nbsp;But no-one knows what caused it.&nbsp;Some believe it was the air burst of a meteor. But no evidence has ever been found.&nbsp;No debris. No crash site.&nbsp;So what exploded in 1908? And is it anything to do with the crater?&nbsp;Vadim Kolpakov continued his research for the rest of his life. But if he was looking for a scientific explanation, he didn&rsquo;t find it.&nbsp;At least, not in terms&nbsp;of human science, anyway.&nbsp;Because there&rsquo;s another theory. Another explanation.&nbsp;That the crater wasn&rsquo;t created by accident. No meteor hit Siberia.&nbsp;Instead, something landed. Something from far, far away.&nbsp;A spacecraft.&nbsp;And, for some unknown reason, whoever came here left behind the Nest of the Fire Eagle.&nbsp;And it&rsquo;s alive!&nbsp;The egg-shaped rock is said to be constantly moving and changing shape, rising and falling. It swells and deflates, and swells again.&nbsp;Is it communicating something? If so, what?&nbsp;And who is picking up the messages?&nbsp;To this day, people visiting the site complain of headaches and ringing in their ears.&nbsp;Are people&rsquo;s bodies reacting to an alien force field?&nbsp;When Vadim Kolpakov met the Yakut people back in 1949, they warned him to stay away from the Nest of the Fire Eagle.&nbsp;They said it was dangerous.&nbsp;Perhaps they were right.
