Walk through the Pile city gate, set into the three-metre thick city wall constructed between the 12th and 17th centuries, and you've entered the old town of Dubrovnik

This gate is a monolithic stone edifice and once you've settled in. you can walk the wall, looking down on the Romanesque terracotta-tiled rooftops. It can take a couple of hours, but it's well worth it.
