After a lifetime on stage, television and the big screen, fans might think nothing can frighten Dame Helen Mirren. Just don’t try sending her to Mars!
“There’s no way I would sign up to go into outer space,” the acting legend shudders. “I find the whole concept absolutely terrifying. I have nightmares about it, actually. There’s no way. I want a cup of tea, Marmite on toast and a fire!”
Fortunately for the multi-award-winning actress, her latest role as a septuagenarian who volunteers for a one-way trip through the Milky Way didn’t require her to leave the comforts of planet Earth.
The Amazon Prime show called Solos, which premiered last week, instead offered Helen the opportunity to reflect on the idea that it’s never too late to take a chance.
“My character Peg has seen an advertisement saying, ‘Go on the adventure of a lifetime!’ and her life has always been about avoiding adventure and stepping back rather than stepping forward. She’s coming towards the end of her life and I think she just has one of those ‘let’s got for it!’ moments and signs up.
“All that she is aware of is that there is no return and so, in a way, it’s a metaphor about life…”
The Queen actress has constantly surprised audiences with her ground-breaking roles.
