With more than 300,000Kiwis living with osteoarthritis, what can you do to avoid getting this painful degenerative disease?
It’s unusual not to know someone with arthritis, and most of us are likely to end up with it if we live into our 80s. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, causing stiffness, painful and swollen joints, and reduced mobility. This is due to the rubbery cartilage that acts as a cushion between bones wearing away. As a result, it’s also known as “wear and tear” arthritis.
It can occur at any stage of life but is more common the older you get. Around half of all people aged 60 and over have it in at least one joint, while virtually everyone aged 80 and over has it to some extent. Women tend to suffer from it more than men and if someone in your family has it, your chances increase.
