Elisabeth Easther Discovers Going The Distance For Rekohu Is Worth It.

When you tell people you’re going to Rekohu in the Chatham Islands, they invariably say, “I’ve always wanted to go there,” but for some reason decided it could be a bit challenging, so don’t go.

Now that I’ve actually visited these dramatic islands, I can vouch for the fact that it’s not challenging at all. Yes, they’re a fair distance away – 1119km from Auckland – but its history, its fascinating people, and the extraordinary bird and sea life are just a few of the many reasons to make the effort.

One aspect of Chatham Island life that stands out in particular is how incredibly dynamic the local women are.

Toni Croon moved to the island aged six. At the age of 18, she became the island’s first female crayfish diver and, at 23, she bought the pub and hotel with her brother Val.
