It’s meant to be their ticket to freedom, their way of enjoying the privileged lifestyle they’re used to without the financial support of the royal family.
But now Prince Harry, 37, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, 40, are being urged to walk away from their lucrative Netflix deal because working with the company is seen by some as condoning its shoddy treatment of Harry’s mum, Princess Diana.
A furore has broken out over Harry’s link to the streaming service – which is paying him and Meghan an estimated $150m to create documentaries, children’s shows and feature films for it – because it makes the controversial series The Crown, about his family. The fifth season, being shot now, covers the years from 1990, including the break-up of Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles and her romance with surgeon Hasnat Khan.
Allegations have surfaced that the show is not being respectful to Diana, and the claims are being taken seriously because they’ve been made by someone who was close to the late princess.
Socialite-turned scriptwriter Jemima Khan, 47, has never spoken about her friendship with Diana, but she agreed to work as a consultant on the latest series of The Crown because she felt it was important the truth was told. She says she wanted the final years of Diana’s life to be portrayed “accurately and with compassion, as has not always happened in the past”.
