Last year, Kath Robertson didn’t get perfume or socks. Here, she reveals her unexpected present.
No matter your age, you always look forward to seeing the Christmas tree with presents piled all around. It’s part of the excitement. But the gift I got under the tree last Christmas didn’t arrive on Santa’s sleigh, and as for wrapping paper, forget it! my gift was altogether more special…
Christmas has always been a big deal to me and my husband Toby. We first met in April 2008, through my sister, and we soon moved in together.
Looking forward to our first Christmas living together, I spent hours decorating our tree. And on the big day, Toby cooked a delicious turkey.
‘This is perfect,’ I smiled, as we cuddled up, watching festive films. After that, every December I’d go shopping for baubles to add to our collection. Then we’d spend Christmas Day just the two of us.
We got married in October 2011, and in early 2012, we were thrilled to discover that I was pregnant.
I had a demanding job as a primary school teacher but luckily didn’t suffer morning sickness. I loved watching my bump grow with each passing month.
In September 2012 – two weeks late – our son Will was born. Overjoyed, Toby and I cried tears of happiness.
Three months later, I smiled as I cradled him in my arms in front of the Christmas tree, seeing the fairy lights reflected in his curious eyes.
Sharp twinges
In spring 2015, we were so happy to discover I was pregnant again – this time with a girl, due 10 January 2016.
