Stuck for present-shopping inspiration, fancy sampling some cosmopolitan food, or just want to get away from it all before the countdown to Christmas properly arrives? The solution is simple – hop on a train! Here’s our pick of the best places to visit to soak up some festive atmosphere before the big day itself…
Brussels
The Belgian capital is always worth a visit. However, the Grand-Place is enhanced at the centre of the Winter Wonders festival. There’s no Christmas Market this year, but there will be a gorgeous Christmas tree, a life-size nativity scene and Christmas lights aplenty.
Soak up the atmosphere on a stroll up towards the Marché aux Poissons, but if it’s too cold, head for the city’s biggest indoor Christmas market on Place Flagey.
HOW TO DO IT: Eurostar tickets from St Pancras to BrusselsSouth cost from £44pp one way; visit eurostar.com. Stay at Hilton Grand-Place; doubles cost from £152 per night. Visit www3.hilton. com. More info: visit.brussels/en

'THAT'S NOT MY BABY'
Lying in the hospital bed, my husband Michael had tears of happiness in his eyes as he showed me a photo on his phone. 'Here she is,' he said proudly. 'There must be a mistake.'It was August 2010 and I'd not long before had an emergency caesarean. I'd not had a chance to see Winnie when she arrived as she'd been whisked away for tests because she was nearly two months premature.
