I started getting hearing loss in my late 30s, and I was devastated. I found it difficult to hear someone if they weren’t directly facing me, which became a problem when I signed up to train as a teacher and couldn’t hear what my tutor was saying when he turned away from the class. I had to drop out.

It got progressively worse and my GP suggested hearing aids. I used a variety of different ones over the years but none of them really cut the mustard – they kept cutting out and looked ugly.
