‘I've never ironed anything in my life'

Recently, I shocked a group of otherwise unshockable women by admitting that I’ve never ironed a piece of clothing in my life. Cue gasps around the room.

‘That revelation explains a lot,’ snorted one person less than cryptically, looking me over from top to toe.

This is because I like to wear a lot of cotton and linen, and don’t give a monkey’s how crumpled it is. I watch people swanning round the tropics in TV costume dramas wearing beautifully pressed pleats, and think ‘servants’.
