The Lexicon Art Gallery held its Annual Exhibition &#39;Manthan&#39; recently at the India Habitat Center, New Delhi delighting not only the art aficionados of the city but others too who happened to be there. The title &#39;Manthan&#39; which means churning in English is quite apt as the Gallery had thoughtfully chosen and displayed works of 31 Contemporary Indian Visual Artists from an array of artists including some very well known names to others who have the potential to become so. &#39;Manthan&#39; or churning has a deep meaning in Indian philosophy and mythology. There are works deeply connected overtly with mythology playing an important role in them and there are others covertly looking at the Self and posing an enquiry to oneself which is another form of churning. The combination of the two makes for compelling viewing.With the presence of both paintings and sculptures tastefully displayed, the gallery was a visual delight. What was unique was Gond art featured as part of contemporary art. The works of both Bhajju Shyam and Jangarh Singh Shyam gives a distinct flavour of Gond art and reflects how traditional painting is now a part of the so called mainstream. The beauty of lines is brought out in maestro Satish Gujral&rsquo;s painting. Sunil Das also portrayed one of the beautiful work from his Bull series. The art of Jogen Chowdhury shows his strength with capturing human emotions. The works of Suhas Roy and his enigmatic women continued to draw attention at the gallery.Every artist has a way of expressing himself. Just how Rabin Mondal captures different shades beautifully in his heads. Sujata Achrekar finds poise within her work with eyes turned inward and the blooming of lotus in the mind. Seema Kohli works on different layers of both mythology and inner thought process which is reflected in her works. Thota Vaikuntan captures the melody of bhakti and folk traditions beautifully. Ramesh Gorjala executes the story of Lord Hanuman with different incidents from his life all coming together on one canvas. Laxman Aelay brings the life of village alive in his works. Shyamal Mukherjee uses strong colours and figures to convey a story inspired by real people.Asit Patnaik works on human relationships, its dynamics and in particular of man and woman. Jagannath Paul looks at the joy of togetherness, contentment and in peace within oneself. Bolgum Nagesh Goud brings alive Krishna from Brindawan with its many facets. Arpita Reddy brings divinity to life with her work on Padma Priya and bringing the feminine into perspective. Gouri Vemula brings the whole Araku valley to life with her brilliant pen and ink on canvas, the attention to detail striking in its minuteness.
