<p>THE GREEN LONGHORN IS A VERY unmoth-like moth and flies during the day - you might easily think you have spotted some kind of beetle. The male has an exceptionally long pair of wiry antennae that recall a cat's whiskers, and because these are white, they show up from quite a distance. Its forewings are an eye-catching shade of bottle-green or bronze, with a sheen that glints in late-spring sunshine. All this is offset by luxurious black hair on the head and body.</p>
<p>Green longhorn moths are usually seen flitting around sunny woodland clearings and hillsides in May and June, often near oak or birch trees. The males gather, seemingly to perform a kind of group courtship display, or lek, during which their dancing flight is even more striking. You may also notice them resting on sun-warmed leaves and flowers, occasionally in a tree or bush some distance above the ground.</p>
