When You're Well and Truly Tonked
Candilee Jackson
Tonkinese

Introduction

My name is Candine Lee Jackson, and I am Tonk-a-holic. Yup, I freely admit having a “TO,” a Tonk Obsession. These gorgeous critters have taken over my life, home, and heart, and I own it gladly. And I’m NOT alone!

From the first meeting, Tonk owners quickly realize that the adage “Cats rule; dogs drool” is apropos, and the Tonkinese were put on earth to rule over its inhabitants. This highly intelligent, affectionate feline clown supervises its world and all humans as if born to this quest. “The Tonkinese is a natural at inventing and playing games, using favorite toys to play fetch or delighting in games of tag and hide-and-seek with other pets – or even humans.”1 Kitten-like and playful well into their senior years, Tonkinese greet visitors and engage their humans and other pets in their family in game-playing. Probably the only “downfall” of having a Tonk as part of a family is that they bore easily and often get into mischief: A closed door or drawer is a mystery to be solved, and toys must be rotated in and out of their space to avoid boredom.

Tonks are expected to be a major part of family life, and they prefer not to be alone. Cat videos and radios set to classical music or easy listening help soothe a lonely Tonk. However, having more than one Tonkinese is preferred, not only as a companion but also as a playmate and groomer. Remember, Tonks are like potato chips: One is not enough!

Do Tonks Talk a Lot?

Please note: Tonks are conversationalists who often speak in essays, complete with footnotes. “Their vocalizing has a purpose and expects a response.”1 Tonkinese communicate well and presume: 1. A listener at full attention; 2. An answer from said listener; and 3. A solution to their issue from said listener. (No, I’m not kidding).

UP CLOSE AND Purr-sonal

If there is one person, or even just a name, that anyone in CFA (Cat Fancier Association) knows, it would have to be Allene Tartaglia. It might be from her involvement with most aspects of the operations of CFA in her position of executive director. Or perhaps from her deep involvement with both the CFA Annual meeting and/or the International Show. Cat Talk thought it was time to learn more about one of the most key people in CFA.

Alternative Arthritis Treatments for Cats

Just like humans, cats can experience arthritis. About 90% of cats over the age of 10 years experience osteoarthritis (OA) in at least one joint.1 It is a complex condition involving inflammation and degeneration of one or more joints and is sometimes referred to as degenerative joint disease (DJD). Cats with OA experience pain and inflammation in various joints that interfere with daily activities.
