What You Don't Know About American Wirehairs

Introduction

Living in the Midwest Region as an exhibitor, this author does not always get to see all of CFA’s recognized cat breeds during any given season, not by a long shot! The year 2000 marked the beginning of my show career with Tonkinese, and my first show was an eye-opener. At that time CFA recognized forty-two breeds, most of which were unheard of to this writer!

The first American Wirehair introduced to me left me wondering how a cat could remind me of a Brillo pad and yet be pleasingly soft to the touch. Their coats are a true contradiction–coarse and a bit harsh in texture due to the crimps and bends in each individual hair, yet surprisingly pleasant to handle. The feeling is pure fascination, not to mention irresistible. I was fascinated and wanted to learn more.
