Royal Norfolk, Norfolk ShowgroundGEMMA ELLISON claimed an emotional first international stairway victory with the unconventional Helsinki VDL.Just two riders jumped double clears, with Gemma and the 12-year-old grey winning from final draw, 4.53sec in front of runners-up Phillip Miller and Don Royale."Phillip had gone clear but wasn't one of the quicker ones, and I thought that if I could leave the fences up and go at Hels' normal pace, we could go ahead," said Gemma, who was also fifth with Miss Conthargos TW. "He gave me a great ride and rose to the occasion."Hels can be a handful in the collecting ring and is also "difficult to get in a consistent pattern" but is more than capable of pulling an impressive win out of the bag."People know him for being a bit of an idiot!" Gemma said. "But he's feeling really well and happy at the moment and more relaxed to ride."There was a big crowd watching and when he went in the ring he was a bit slow to pick up trot, where he was looking round. He is a bit of a show-off, so I think he knew it was one of those rounds that counted." Helen Tredwell followed up on an area trial victory at Hertfordshire County and the grand prix at South of England with a win in the area trial here, in the saddle of Wayne and Jane Cox's Independence TN.Three riders produced treble clears, with Phillip and Don Royale once again taking second place.
