RIDER ABI LYLE“I WAS at Talland and a client called Lotty Chatterton had bought ‘Arty’ at auction and was interested in getting involved in the dressage world. She had seen me ride a tricky young horse and liked how I handled it. She asked if I’d be interested in riding Arty – who had just been backed. “I was still new to the gig so I bit her arm off. It’s cool because people think you must have been successful to get good rides whereas she’d seen me getting squashed against a wall and took a chance on me. “I was a little intimidated at first because I’d never ridden a horse of his quality but once I got the hang of him I fell so ridiculously in love with him. “When Arty was six years old Lotty decided to sell him and I couldn’t give him up. So, with a little help from Barclays bank, I bought him. I didn’t even give much thought as to whether he was going to get to grand prix – to me he was perfect and even if he hadn’t made it I probably wouldn’t have cared. “But now here we are, preparing to compete in Paris – even if sometimes I still feel like a wee happy hacker.”Breeder Leon Eggink “TO be honest, as a foal Arty looked a bit normal. His conformation was good but he would never trot in the field – he just liked to canter everywhere. “After being turned away for a couple of years, he decided to trot and he looked amazing so we took him to the KWPN stallion licensing. He made the second round but ended up going to Joop van Uytert after the first viewing. “In the end, he didn’t become a licensed stallion but my grandfather, Gerrit Eggink, always loved his breeding and was sure he’d become a grand prix horse. Then we read that he’d gone to the UK but we didn’t know who had him. We didn’t hear about him for years until I got an email in 2017 saying that he’d been selected for the World Championships for young dressage horses. “I saw that Abi was the rider so I reached out to her and from then we’ve developed this amazing relationship where we now speak every day, which I think is quite rare for a breeder and a rider.” JUDGE PETER STORR“GIRALDO has always been a lovely horse all the way through the levels. What Abi has done with him is a testament to what you can achieve with hard work, focus and determination. “She’s got stuck in to her training with Carl Hester, she’s a polished competition rider and my hat’s off to her – she’s done a really good job and they’ve improved dramatically over the years. “He had nice movement and basics as a young horse and that has only developed as he has strengthened and muscled up over the time. Training all the movements takes a long time, of course, but he’s obviously been trained well and is really coming into his own at the level. “Giraldo’s very well-rounded and doesn’t have any obvious weaknesses – perhaps the piaffe was a little slower to develop but that’s looking much better now too. “It’s one thing to train a horse to grand prix but to improve them once they’re there is more challenging and it comes down to training and riding – and that’s what Abi’s been successful at.”
